LSU stuns Arkansas with 3-run 9th inning to walk-off Razorbacks, advance to CWS Finals ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

LSU is going back to the College World Series Finals. The Tigers pulled off a stunning 9th-inning rally to overcome a 2-run deficit and walk it off 6-5, eliminating the Razorbacks.

In an instant classic, fans were initially treated to a pitcher’s duel. In the final 4 innings, things got crazy, with 5 runs scored in a 9th inning that will be talked about for years to come.

Arkansas called on Cole Gibler to seal the deal with a 5-3 advantage. He started the inning with a strikeout, but then Derek Curiel singled and advanced to 2nd base on a throwing error. Ethan Frey became the Tigers’ second baserunner with a walk.

In a play that will haunt the Razorbacks for years, Steven Milam grounded to short. Instead of trying for the double play to end the game, Razorback star shortstop Wehiwa Aloy decided to get the force out at 3rd base. The ESPN broadcast strongly felt it was a double-play ball.

The next batter, Luis Herenandez, doubled to left field as Charles Davalan misplayed the ball, tying it 5-5.

This deep into the College World Series, there was plenty of uncertainty surrounding which pitchers would get the start.. LSU‘s Jay Johnson turned to Zac Cowan. Dave Van Horn went with Landon Beidelschies. Both pitched well enough to give their team the chance to win.

Cowan gave the Tigers a strong performance, posting a line of 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 K. The only run charged to Cowan was a solo home run mashed by Ryder Helfrick. It went 417 feet to center field at 108 mph off the bat with a 27.72-degree launch angle.

Beidelschies had a strong 5 innings before running into trouble in the 6th. He recorded a season-high 9 strikeouts, walking only 1 and allowing 3 hits.

In the 6th, Beidelschies was chased after giving up a leadoff double and then hitting the next batter. A bunt put both runners in scoring position with 1 out. Van Horn decided it was time to turn to Gabe Gaeckle in hopes of protecting the lead.

Gaeckle picked up a key strikeout before an intentional walk. With the bases loaded, Johnson countered by bringing in Jake Brown to pinch-hit. This round went to Johnson and LSU, with Brown bringing in 2 runs to give the Tigers their first lead, 2-1.

The edge-of-your-seat drama returned in the top of the 8th when Arkansas loaded the bases with 1 out, trailing 2-1. Helfrick returned to the plate and delivered again – in a much different way. It wasn’t a homer, but Helfrick put it in play and 2 runs came home.

The Tigers tried to turn a double play on a ground ball to 3rd base. The runner at 2nd base was out, but Jared Jones could not field it at 1st base, meaning Helfrick was safe, allowing 2 runs to cross the plate and give Arkansas a 3-2 lead.

Jones redeemed himself in a big way, hitting a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the 8th to tie it up 3-3. He hit it 397 feet, 109 mph off the bat with a 29.62-degree launch angle.

Arkansas briefly retook the lead in the top of the 9th when Justin Thomas Jr. plated 2 runs. Even an insurance run was not enough on Wednesday night.

Earlier Wednesday, Coastal Carolina cruised past Louisville to punch its ticket to the CWS Finals. Thursday was an if-necessary day on the CWS bracket, with Friday a planned off day. The best-of-3 championship series between LSU and Coastal Carolina will begin Saturday.
