CFP executive director says ‘everything’s on the table’ for new format ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

College Football Playoff executive director Rich Clark isn’t sure what the Playoff format will look like starting with the 2026 season and beyond, but he knows 1 thing for sure: Nothing can be ruled out.

“Pretty much everything’s on the table and they’re taking a good look at it — all of it,” Clark told ESPN on Wednesday after 2 days of meetings in Asheville, N.C. “So, I wouldn’t say there’s a leading contender right now for them, but they’re taking a fresh look at it.”

College Football Playoff officials are “mulling over” what a potential new Playoff format will look like in 2026 and for years after that. It’s all very much up in the air right now regarding the Playoff format, but right now nothing is being discounted by Clark after the 2-day conference in North Carolina.

At the SEC’s spring meetings in Destin, Fla., in May, there was new backing from the conference’s head coaches for a 16-team format that would include the 5 highest-ranked conference champions to go with 11 at-large teams. That format gained support from other conferences while surprising many Big Ten Conference leaders.

The SEC and Big Ten have the majority of control over the next iteration of the Playoff, but the 2 powerhouse conferences have not been on the same page as far as what the new Playoff format will look like.

At this point, as Clark said, nothing is being ruled out and time will tell what the format will look like come the fall of 2026.
