TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant T-Mobile is finally sending out the first round of checks worth up to $25,000 from a $350 million pot.

Consumers will soon see their payments from the data breach settlement, which was approved back in 2023, after several years of limbo.

T-Mobile, one of the largest wireless network operators in the country, has been wrapped up in a class action settlement for years relating to a 2021 cyberattack.

The data breach affected roughly 76 million customers, potentially exposing personal information such as addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth.

Plaintiffs argued that T-Mobile could have averted the attack by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures.

Although the company did not admit to any wrongdoing, it agreed to cough up $350 million in a settlement to resolve the claims and prevent further legal costs.

Those impacted by the settlement, which was approved in court in June 2023, were previously notified of the legal proceedings and invited to file a claim for compensation.

Payments worth up to $25,000 were estimated for T-Mobile users who provided documentation of financial losses or identity theft stemming from the cyberattack, while Americans without proof would get an average check of $25, or up to $100 for California residents.

What's a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes,' a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.

Class members were also allowed to submit a claim to enroll in two years of free identity defense services, including credit monitoring.

The deadline to file a claim in the T-Mobile settlement was over two years ago, in January 2023 – but affected customers are finally getting the cash they are entitled to.

The payments were initially expected to begin going out in April 2025, but unexpected delays pushed back that date to May 2025, per the settlement website.

While the reason behind the delays was not disclosed by T-Mobile, the company has begun distributing settlement payments after years of customers waiting for their checks.

Some valid claimants may have already received their cash through the mail, direct deposit, or other electronic avenues, while others will see their payments drop over the following several weeks.

Confirmed payout amounts were sent out to those who filed a successful claim in October 2024.

Americans may be eligible to receive free cash from another class action settlement, but must act fast as the claim window ends in just hours.

The popular home appliance manufacturer Whirlpool is in hot water due to claims that a number of its Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Maytag refrigerators are defective.

The class action settlement involving the company reveals that the fridges, manufactured between 2012 and 2019, are susceptible to frost build-up thanks to a manufacturing defect.

As a result, the refrigerators are unable to properly cool food.

“These models can develop excessive frost buildup on the evaporator coils, which blocks airflow, impairs cooling performance, and risks spoiled food,” Dennis Godynik, lead appliance expert at Comfort Appliance Repair in Tennessee, told Home and Gardens.

The settlement class encompasses individuals who purchased a new qualifying refrigerator, acquired one under the purchase or remodel of a house, or received a new one as a gift.

How to get your free $300

Whirlpool customers who believe they may be eligible to claim the cash should search for a serial number on the settlement website.

Once on the website, consumers should enter their model and serial number, and then upload any relevant repair documents.

After uploading the document, claimants should write a short description of the defect and submit the claim.

The website states that claims can usually be submitted without receipts; however, providing more documentation generally results in a higher payout.

The amount that class members receive depends on the age of the refrigerator at the time of the repairs.

The maximum claim that people can receive is $300 for past repairs or replacements.

That $300 payment only applies if the refrigerator was one to three years old at the time of the repair.

If the model is over four years old, the payment becomes less.

Those with an appliance four to six years old will be paid $225, while those with a refrigerator seven to eight years old will receive $150.

On average, claimants will receive $70 each.

Whirlpool, despite denying any wrongdoing, agreed to dish out up to $300 to each class member for documented out-of-pocket expenses related to past refrigerator repairs and replacements.

Class members must submit a valid claim form by the end of the day today, June 18, to receive payment.

Time is also running out for Americans to claim up to $10,100 from a $990,000 data breach settlement – your location impacts your payout amount.

Plus, college students can get a chunk of a $17 million settlement if they were affected by the pandemic.
