People will be gathering in cities across the Bay Area this week to celebrate Juneteenth at festivals, runs and parade, commemorating the freeing of enslaved African Americans in Texas 160 years ago.

Two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, federal troops freed the remaining enslaved people in the state. The first celebration of Juneteenth was held in Texas in 1866 and it is now considered the longest-running holiday for Black and African American communities.
Here are some of the events planned to mark the occasion in the Bay Area this week:
Hella Juneteenth Festival (Oakland): June 19, noon to 5 p.m., 1000 Oak Street. Oakland’s annual Black-led festival will feature DJs, food by Black chefs, art installations, Black-owned vendors, kids’ games and more. Tickets cost $20 for general admission and $95 for VIP admission.
Freedom Run (Oakland): June 19, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Snow Park. Renegade and Town Strides are hosting an evening 5k run and walk around Lake Merritt as a “tribute to Black resilience, joy, and the freedom to move through the world on our terms.”
Juneteenth Heritage Gala Celebration of Freedom Awards (Oakland): June 19, 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., 1900 Broadway. The second annual gala will honor Oakland’s hometown heros who “embody the spirit of freedom and progress.” The night will feature gourmet food by Black chefs, wine tastings with Black vinters and live entertainment.
Children’s Fairyland: Juneteenth Celebration (Oakland): June 19, 699 Bellevue. In honor of Juneteenth, Children’s Fairyland is staying open an extra hour until 5 p.m. and offering special activities including block-tee printing, special beverages and a clown.
Juneteenth Potluck at Burdell (Oakland): June 19, 4640 Telegraph Avenue. The popular soul-food restaurant is hosting its second annual Juneteenth celebration, which will feature a family-style menu focused on oxtail.
Juneteenth: A Freedom Celebration (Antioch): June 19, 4 .m. – 8 p.m., Williamson Ranch Park. This fourth annual city-sponsored Juneteenth celebration will feature food, live performances, music, activities and more.
CityDance San Jose’s Juneteenth Celebration: June 19, 6 – 9 p.m., 127 S. Market Street. CityDance will be hosting a Juneteenth Celebration for socializing, dancing and music at the Circle of Palms in Downtown San Jose.
Juneteenth Community Celebration (San Jose): June 19, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose. This event, aimed at children, will celebrate community, freedom and culture. It will include a drumming workshop and a make-your-own percussion instrument craft.
Juneteenth Celebration & Street Festival (Oakland): June 21, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Brockhurst Street. B-H Brilliant Minds Project, Inc. is hosting the 18th annual celebration, which will focus on the theme “We Are Tapping Into The Ancestors’ Wisdom and Having the Freedom to Express Ourselves!” The celebration will also focus on knowledge and creativity that was passed down through generations.
Juneteenth Celebration and Parade (Richmond): June 21, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Nicholl Park. This celebration will feature dance performances, live music, food, family-friendly activities, cultural diplays and more. The event is also aimed at pursuing a more equitable society.
Juneteenth Celebration (East Palo Alto): June 21, 11:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., Bell Street Park. The City of East Palo Alto and Live in Peace are putting on this Juneteenth Celebration, which is set to have community, music, culture and more.
Juneteenth Celebration (Livermore): June 21, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This local celebration of Juneteenth will feature art and music displays, vendors, drumming and more.
Lakefest Oakland: June 21, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., 568 Bellevue Avenue. Adding to the weekend’s festivities is Lakefest, an annual festival featuring live music, food and vendors to celebrate community and culture.
Juneteenth Parade (San Francisco): June 22, 11 a.m., Market Street. The third annual Juneteenth Parade will feature floats, vehicles and walkers as it goes from Spear Street to 8th Street. Attendees can line the streets to watch as the parade honors the heritage and resilience of African Americans.
Juneteenth Celebration (Concord): June 23, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Todos Santos Plaza. The city’s second annual Juneteenth Celebration, which is planned by Concord Communities Alliance, will feature activities for kids, spoken word and performances with a focus on health and wellness in the Black community. The event will also feature food trucks and Black-owned vendors.
