Just 13 minutes of game time at the 2023 Club World Cup proved the final straw for Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City.
The Englishman‘s £45million move to the Etihad Stadium in 2022 promised to take him to the next level, only for him to join David Moyes‘ West Ham on loan 18 months later in a bid to revive his career.
Kalvin Phillips made 10 appearances altogether for West Ham during his 2024 loan spellGettyAnd the Scottish coach could soon look to breathe new life into another Man City star off the back of disappointment surrounding the FIFA showpiece.
talkSPORT understands that Moyes’ current club Everton hold a genuine interest in Citizens defender Kyle Walker.
After spending the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, the 35-year-old’s time in sky blue now almost certainly looks to be up.
Walker was brutally axed from City’s Club World Cup squad, who begin their campaign in the United States on June 18 against Moroccan side Wydad.
While Pep Guardiola’s side battle it out for a second world title in two years, following their last victory in 2023, the Englishman will consider his future, which could lie on Merseyside.
And should Walker end up signing for Moyes, he wouldn’t be the first City star to tread this path after Club World Cup disappointment.
In January 2024, his teammate Phillips was handed a lifeline by the Scot when he brought him to the Hammers on loan after a difficult spell in Manchester.
Once one of the hottest midfield properties after impressing with Leeds and England, Phillips’ fortunes took a turn for the worse at the Citizens’, where he struggled to establish himself in their team of superstars.
Despite being part of a City side that won an historic treble in his debut season at the club, he was far from a key player in this success, starting just two of his 21 appearances in all competitions.
The Yorkshireman’s hopes of nailing down a starting berth were blocked by Rodri‘s imperious form in holding midfield, while he was also publicly criticised by Guardiola, who infamously claimed he had returned from the 2022 World Cup overweight.

Phillips played just 13 minutes off the bench in a 3-0 semi-final victory over Japanese outfit Urawa Red Diamonds, before watching on from the bench as his side battered Fluminense 4-0 to clinch glory.
At this point it became clear the Yorkshireman would have to look elsewhere for regular game time, with his move to the London Stadium a month later promising a fresh start under Moyes.
Speaking after his arrival at West Ham, Phillips said: “I’m really pleased to be here.
“There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now.
“There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the club and I can’t wait to be part of it.
David Moyes brought Phillips on loan to the London Stadium in his final season in charge of West HamGetty The Englishman’s disastrous loan spell in east London saw him lose his place in the England squad, and he has not been recalled sinceGetty“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season.”
Unfortunately for Phillips, he was unable rediscover the form that saw him play a key role in England’s run to the final of Euro 2020.
The 29-year-old started just three of his ten appearances for the Irons and picked up a red card in his fourth match for the club, with his performances seeing him miss out on England’s Euro 2024 squad.
His spell in east London also saw him make the headlines for the wrong reasons, as he was caught on camera swearing at an angry fan who had criticised his recent performances.
Phillips briefly returned to City following the end of his loan, and was an unused substitute as his side won the 2024 Community Shield.
Shortly after this, he joined newly-promoted Ipswich on loan, with his second spell away from the Etihad also failing to inspire his best form, making 19 Premier League appearances as the Tractor Boys were relegated straight back to the Championship.
