CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A man accused of killing a Pageland woman nearly four years ago is officially on trial.
On Monday, a jury was selected in Chesterfield County for Emanuel Bedford’s trial.
He’s charged with kidnapping and killing Deidre Reid in 2021.
After the jury selection, we heard opening statements from both sides – two of Reid’s sisters, Tina and Monaca, and a lieutenant from the Pageland Police Department.
The sisters gave emotional testimonies about how tight-knit the family is and how unusual it was that when Reid went to Greyhound bus station in Charlotte to drop off Bedford, she never got in touch with them after. He was supposed to be going back home to Georgia.
Reid was supposed to meet up afterward to go shopping for outfits for an upcoming wedding for their cousin the next day.
The last time anyone heard from Reid was her sister Tina September 3, 2021.
The family decided to start a search for Reid the next morning if no one heard from her – we learned that they met at their mom’s house to do this.
They went to Georgia to search for her – and had a lot of difficulty getting in contact with Bedford – but eventually they did, and they recorded the conversation. Even though it was difficult to understand in the courtroom, we did get to listen to pieces of it out of order.
One thing that was easier to understand was that he said he got off the bus in Georgia and agreed to help the family search for her.
We last heard from Lt. Marcia Miller from Pageland Police who said Bedford gave information on what happened the day Reid went missing. Bedford also provided two phone numbers for Reid. Miller said she saw the video at the bus stop of Bedford exchanging his bus ticket when he missed the bus.
Miller said no one was able to ping those phones or find Reid or ever recover a body.
Officials a few days later found Reid’s truck partially submerged in an Aiken County Pond with traces of her blood inside.
Reid’s family was relieved that a jury was selected. Two months ago, not enough jurors showed up for the jury selection process.
