Gage Wood delivered a performance for the ages in Omaha on Monday afternoon. Arkansas had its back against the wall, facing elimination against an underdog Murray State team.
Wood stepped up for his squad in an incredible way. He threw the third no-hitter in College World Series history, the first since Jim Wixson of Oklahoma State back in 1960 (against North Carolina). He struck out 19 Murray State hitters, which is a College World Series record for a 9-inning game.
The only thing that separated the Arkansas flamethrower from the first perfect game in CWS history was a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning. After the game, Wood had the perfect quote in an interview with ESPN:
“I shouldn’t have hit the guy,” Wood said with a stony face. “That’s it. That’s all I got to say.”
Arkansas and coach Dave Van Horn will take the no-hitter, though. It keeps the Razorbacks’ season alive after a CWS-opening loss to SEC rival LSU.
Now Arkansas advances to a Tuesday night elimination game against either LSU again or UCLA.
It’ll get lost in the no-hitter headlines, but by pitching all 9 innings, Wood has saved his bullpen. Now Arkansas should have a full staff for Tuesday night’s game (minus Wood himself, of course).
