‘He’d get 25 goals’ – Darwin Nunez told to join Liverpool’s Premier League title rivals ...Middle East

Darwin Nunez could become a 25 goal a season striker at Premier League rivals Arsenal.

That is the view of talkSPORT’s Dean Saunders, who believes the Uruguayan has the potential to shine elsewhere should he leave Liverpool this summer.

talkSPORT understands Nunez is likely to depart Anfield over the coming months, with the Reds valuing him at over £59million.

The striker has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, having previously seen a £59m bid for him from Al Nassr rejected in January.

Nunez’s likely exit comes after finding his playing time limited under Arne Slot last term, starting in just eight league of his 30 league appearances as the Reds lifted the Premier League title.

Since joining for a club-record £85m from Benfica in 2022, the 25-year-old has struggled to establish himself as first-choice up front, often proving wasteful in front of goal.

He managed just seven goals in all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign, with his best Premier League tally of 11 coming in 2023/24.

Despite this however, talkSPORT host Saunders believes Nunez’s all-round attributes still make him a hugely attractive option for a number of clubs.

So much so in fact, that he backed the frontman to put his past woes behind him and notch a staggering 25 goals at league rivals Arsenal.

With Liverpool set to complete the signing of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz for a British transfer record £116.5m deal, Saunders discussed Nunez’s future prospects, as he admitted he could well make way for the Reds’ new recruit.

Appearing on talkSPORT Breakfast, he said: “Is there any fan out there that if the club was linked with Nunez would be disappointed?

“I agree that he’s not got enough goals for Liverpool, but I think we all look at him with the same eyes.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he went to Arsenal and scored 25 goals, or anywhere [else].”

Arsenal have made signing a striker their top priority this summer, having held talks with main target Viktor Gyokeres, who netted a staggering 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting Lisbon last term.

The Gunners have also held talks with RB Leipzig over alternative pick Benjamin Sesko should a move for Gyokeres not materialise.

But Saunders insisted Nunez could prove a better option than both players, highlighting his Premier League experience over the two unproven players, as well as his overall playing style.

On Arsenal, he said: “The people they’ve got lined up, they’re all gambles.

“Every striker you bring in from different leagues into the Premier League, you’re like: ‘Fingers crossed’, because you’ve got to be good to score goals in the Premier League.

“[With Nunez] At least he’s played in the Premier League for three or four years.

“And you know what you’re going to get, he works his socks off, so even if he doesn’t score, he’s not a passenger and that’s why the Liverpool fans like him.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he went somewhere else, but I agree he doesn’t score enough goals for Liverpool.”

Saunders later added: “But I just see a player in there and I just, I think most people see a player in there.”

Should Nunez complete an unlikely move to north London and fulfill Saunders’ prediction, it wouldn’t be the first time he has hit the 25-goal mark in his career.

In his final season at Benfica, the Uruguay international netted a staggering 34 goals in 41 games in all competitions, 26 of which came in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

Since his move to Anfield however, he has found it hard to replicate this form, having netted 40 times in 143 games for Liverpool altogether.
