MCSO: Woman found dead after house fire in Mendocino ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

A woman was dead inside a home that burned early Thursday on the Mendocino Coast, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the MCSO, deputies responded to Gurley Lane in the township of Mendocino around 1:30 a.m. June 12 after it was reported there was “a fully-involved structure fire in the area of Gurley Lane in the township of Mendocino.”

“Initial reports indicated a female occupant was residing in the dwelling, but it was unknown if she was still inside the residence,” the MSCO explained in a press release, noting that MCSO deputies “responded code 3 (lights and siren) from the Fort Bragg area and arrived within minutes.”

When they arrived, the deputies reported that the single-story house was “fully engulfed in flames, (and) due to the intensity of the heat and active fire, deputies were unable to safely approach the burning structure without risking injury. As fire department personnel and equipment arrived on scene to extinguish the blaze, more than two-thirds of the structure had already been consumed by fire. Fire department crews worked vigorously to extinguish the flames and protect a second dwelling on the property that was only feet away.”

While fire crews continued working to extinguish the flames, the MCSO reports that “the body of a deceased person was discovered buried beneath burned material near one of the entrances to the structure. Due to the condition of the decedent’s remains, investigators have been unable to positively identify the victim at this stage of the investigation.”

The MCSO also reports that an investigator from the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority responded “to assist in determining the cause and origin of the fire, (and he found) no evidence of criminal activity related to the fire, and no evidence of any fire accelerants. The official cause and origin of the fire are still being investigated.”

The MCSO adds an autopsy is being scheduled “to determine the official cause and manner of death” of the woman, whose name was not yet released pending identification of the decedent and notification of the next of kin.”

The fire is still under investigation, and “anyone with information regarding this investigation is requested to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center at 707-463-4086 (option 1). Information can also be provided anonymously by calling the non-emergency tip-line at 707-234-2100.”
