San Diego’s efforts to reduce climate-warming pollution earned the City an “A” rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project, the organization announced last week.

The Carbon Disclosure Project, or CDP, is a global nonprofit that analyzes environmental risks and their effects on the economy, people and infrastructure of cities around the world.

Nearly 1,000 cities submitted data for 2024, and only 15% made the A-list cut.

“This honor shows that San Diego is committed to reducing climate risk and creating a safe, healthy and enjoyable future,” said City Planning Director Heidi Vonblum in a release.

Other A-list cities in the United States include Boulder and Denver, Colorado; Austin and Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Palo Alto, California.

Several city programs helped San Diego achieve its A-list status, such as the Climate Action Plan and the Coastal Resilience Master Plan. Other initiatives, such as installing electric vehicle charging stations around the city, contributed to San Diego’s “A” ranking.

“The City is committed to incorporating climate action and resilience goals into its daily decision-making and aligning land use, transportation and environmental policies to support a thriving, sustainable city for generations to come,” Vonblum said.

San Diego’s current Climate Action Plan was adopted in 2022. It builds upon the 2015 version of the plan and sets a city-wide goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035.

According to the CDP, 83% of cities globally face climate hazards such as flooding, extreme heat, wildfires and drought. The CDP’s A-list applauds the efforts of cities to find environmentally conscious solutions that support sustainable economic growth.

“Cities are on the frontline of the climate crisis and are uniquely positioned to drive the Earth-positive decisions needed to balance people, planet, and prosperity,” said Hanah Paik, CDP’s Global Director for Cities, States and Regions.
