ROCHESTER, N.Y. – City and state officials are working on traffic safety upgrades for Lake Avenue following several deadly crashes. A recent analysis by a Denver law firm found Lake Avenue to be the deadliest road per mile in the state.
Glenn Sutton, who lost his son and cousin in a crash on Lake Avenue, emphasized the need for drivers to slow down.
“Like these two kids were loved. It’s a huge loss not only to me but to the community,” Sutton said.
The state completed a review of Lake Avenue between Route 104 and the Lyell Avenue/Smith Street intersection. Plans include traffic signal upgrades, but Sutton stressed that safety is everyone’s responsibility.
“People need to pay attention to the road,” Sutton said.
The city announced the ROC Vision Zero initiative last year, aiming to address traffic safety challenges, particularly on Lake Avenue. William Clinton, president of the Maplewood Neighborhood Association, supported the initiative.
“Vision Zero is definitely a step in the right direction,” Clinton said.
Clinton mentioned that some cities have reduced their fatality rates to zero, but achieving this will require effort and funding. Meanwhile, Sutton urged the community to be vigilant. “If you look twice, you can save a life,” he said.
The state plans to install the safety upgrades later this year.
