Greeley police on Saturday began issuing citations to drivers caught speeding by the department’s new mobile speed cameras.
The two mobile cameras are located in vans placed in high-risk areas. When police first rolled out the cameras, speeding drivers caught by the cameras were issued warnings for the first 30 days. That warning period is now over, police announced in a news release Saturday morning.
Drivers speeding in non-school zones will face a $40 fine, while those in school or maintenance, construction or repair zones will face an $80 fine. These citations do not incur points on a driver’s license.
If the cameras record a driver going 25 mph or more over the posted speed limit, however, police may increase the citation to a misdemeanor offense and serve the driver. In those cases, fines will be higher and points will be assessed.
The city of Greeley contracted with Verra Mobility, a leader in speed safety technology. The mobile cameras capture images of vehicle license plates and send them through secure video. The police will verify each infraction before a fine is issued.
Commander Mike Heck, who oversees the department’s traffic unit, said in the release that the department receives multiple complaints regarding traffic dangers in the community.
“We all must change our reckless driving behavior,” Heck said in the release. “This program has shown how seriously Greeley takes road safety. We believe adding this resource, along with continuing with traditional traffic enforcement, will help improve the quality of life for the citizens of Greeley and make our roads safer.”
