Diamondbacks’ A.J. Puk pulled back from throwing program, will see specialist for elbow ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks reliever A.J. Puk’s road to recovery has been stalled, as the team pulled him back from his throwing program to see a specialist for his left elbow injury, manager Torey Lovullo said on Friday.

Puk will visit orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in person in Los Angeles after feeling some discomfort while throwing on flat ground. The D-backs placed Puk on the 15-day injured list back on April 19 with left elbow inflammation and moved him to the 60-day IL on May 1. He threw out to 120 feet earlier this week but had yet to get up on a mound.

“I  think he’s been nursing some little bumps and bruises, some slight discomfort and just being honest with us,” Lovullo said. “He wanted to continue throwing through it, but I think it got to the point where he was a little curious about it and wanted to see ElAttrache.”

Lovullo said his concern level is moderate.

This news came directly after Lovullo confirmed to Arizona Sports Burns & Gambo Justin Martinez will have Tommy John surgery, ending his season. The exact date is to be announced, as they have to wait for some swelling to calm down.

Corbin Burnes underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, and Lovullo spoke with him on Friday, saying the ace’s spirits were high.

“ I’m over it. I’m definitely over it,” Lovullo said. “We gotta exercise a lot of caution with usage of guys, we’ve gotta follow the protocols and the belief system we have here with our medical team and really reinforce the thought that it’s extremely important  that these athletes have a breaking point and we can’t get close to that.”

There are 43 players on the IL for Tommy John surgery in Major League Baseball, according to FanGraphs. Four are Diamondbacks, with Puk and Christian Montes De Oca on the IL for elbow inflammation.

Puk has had elbow troubles in the past, undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2018. This season, he made eight appearances with a 3.38 ERA. The timing of his injury and Martinez’s stepping away for a shoulder issue coincides with Arizona’s bullpen struggles.

The Diamondbacks will lean on Shelby Miller as the closer for the time being.
