Last month, the Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) Foundation was honored as a 2025 California Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Christopher Ward.
Established in 1988, the MTRP Foundation was founded to preserve and protect Mission Trails, one of the largest urban parks in the country comprised of more than 8,000 acres and 60 miles of trails. The Foundation works in partnership with the City of San Diego, is governed by a Board of Directors, bolstered by volunteers, and is supported by a small staff, dedicated to providing for the park and the community.
Assemblymember Ward shared, “Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation exemplifies what can be accomplished when community and government come together to protect access to natural spaces for all. Parks like Mission Trails play a vital role in addressing the climate crisis, safeguarding our region’s biodiversity, and providing environmental education that inspires the next generation of leaders.”
In the last year, thanks to its land acquisition initiative, the MTRP Foundation has expanded the park by 108 acres, donating parcels acquired through grant funding to the City of San Diego. Also, in the last 12 months, the Foundation has served more than 3,000 youth through its free education programs, has launched a major, multi-year program to make the park and surrounding neighborhoods more fire resilient by removing fire-prone brush and invasive plants at the park, and has continued to work alongside its City of San Diego partners to provide enriching experiences in the outdoors to the community.
Jennifer Morrissey, executive director of the MTRP Foundation, said, “For more than 35 years, the MTRP Foundation has helped to protect and steward Mission Trails, beloved to many and a precious resource in our region. We are grateful to community members who support our work as their generosity allows us to help conserve Mission Trails for the appreciation and enjoyment of current and future park visitors.”
In addition to the MTRP Foundation’s conservation and habitat restoration efforts, the MTRP Foundation offers a range of free educational programs for toddlers to adult learners. The programs provide equal access to outdoor education and foster a sense of place and environmental stewardship.
Andy Field, director of the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of San Diego, added, “The City of San Diego has benefited from our partnership with the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation through their stewardship of the park. Their support has led to a tremendous amount of investment in this regional treasure, including additional funding, the construction of the Visitor and Interpretive Center, and working alongside City staff to ensure that the park is preserved, protected, and enjoyed by future generations. We congratulate the MTRP Foundation on this well-deserved recognition!”
The MTRP Foundation thanks Ward for naming the organization his 2025 Nonprofit of the Year and looks forward to more decades of dedicated work to support Mission Trails.
Ward’s 78th District includes several San Diego communities, among them Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Mission Valley and Tierrasanta.
