Good news for visitors headed out of town.
San Diego International Airport has opened the second stage of the Terminal 1 Parking Plaza, adding about 2,400 parking spaces. The entire Terminal 1 Parking Plaza now offers over 5,200 parking spots located steps from the existing Terminal 1 and the new Terminal 1 building, which is scheduled to open in September.
“We opened the first stage of the Terminal 1 Parking Plaza in August, which more than doubled the number of parking spaces we offered at the previous Terminal 1 parking lot,” said Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “We have a significant demand for onsite parking at SAN, and the opening of stage 2 allows us to better provide that for our customers. We now have nearly 8,500 close-in parking spaces at Terminal 1 and 2 at SAN.”
Drivers can access the Terminal 1 Parking Plaza at 3501 North Harbor Drive, directly across from Terminal 1, by following signs along North Harbor Drive. Entry and exit lanes have ticket kiosks with intercoms that connect to the airport’s Parking Management Office.
The Parking Plaza is divided into three sections, each with distinct colors and graphics to help with finding. It includes glass-backed elevators and open stairwells to improve safety and visibility. The design incorporates open lightwells that allow natural light and ventilation.
There is a free tire-inflation station near the exit on Level 1, and luggage carts are available on all levels. Level 1 parking accommodates vehicles up to 9 feet 6 inches tall; Levels 2 through 5 are for vehicles under 8 feet 4 inches.
The plaza has 1,023 spots for “Clean Vehicles” (including carpool, electric/alternative fuel, and fuel-efficient vehicles), 20 close-in one-hour spaces for quick drop-offs or pickups (ideal for older adults, people with disabilities, or unaccompanied minors), and 185 spots with electric vehicle charging stations.
Sustainability features include an advanced parking guidance system that helps drivers find open spaces quickly, reducing emissions, and a stormwater capture and reuse system that prevents runoff from entering San Diego Bay.
Payment options include pulling a ticket at entry and paying at exit kiosks, pay-on-foot stations located near elevators and stairwells on Level 1, or using a credit card or NFC device at entry and exit points. Vehicles exiting within 10 minutes are not charged.
