Sitting at 34-34, there’s no telling what the Arizona Diamondbacks are going to do more than a month out from the MLB trade deadline.
Will they end up selling at the deadline? Or will it be buying time for general manager Mike Hazen as the team looks to make a push?
“The Diamondbacks are absolutely in a position where they will be trade deadline central if they decide to sell,” ESPN’s Buster Olney told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta. “That’s the feedback I’m getting from other teams, because they do have this range of players unlike the White Sox, unlike the Rockies, unlike the Marlins … that will be really popular in other front offices. If you’re the Diamondbacks, you’re trying to win, but if they decide to sell, there’s an opportunity there.
“I really think the trade deadline should be separated in three groups: buyers, sellers and opportunists. The Diamondbacks could be the No. 1 opportunist at the deadline.”
It’s been a wild ride for the D-backs throughout the first half of the season. One week they look like sellers, the next they look like buyers, especially when taking into account Arizona’s most recent stretch of games.
Arizona pulled off the rare sweep-swept-sweep in their last three series to get back to .500 baseball. It now heads into a three-game series against the 39-29 San Diego Padres.

There’s a world where Arizona continues to float around .500 and looks to recoup assets after increasing the payroll this offseason.
There’s also one where the D-backs find some consistency and dive headfirst into the buyer’s pool.
If that’s the case, there’s a clear area the team should target.
“All these teams are going to have opportunities to improve their pitching staff with fringy type relievers,” Olney said. “If you’re the Diamondbacks, you’re going to take a shot at that, not only because they might make you better, because they’re not going to be very costly.”
It’s been a war of attrition for the D-backs bullpen in 2025.
In addition to reliever A.J. Puk heading to the injured list with left elbow inflammation on April 19 — he’s since been shifted from the 15- to 60-day IL — Kevin Ginkel (right shoulder inflammation, Christian Montes De Oca (right elbow inflammation), Kendall Graveman (right hip impingement), Cristian Mena (right shoulder strain) and Justin Martinez (sprained right ulnar collateral ligament) have all had or are currently serving IL stints.
The instability due to injuries has only hindered the bullpen, which sports a 5.21 ERA (27th in the MLB).
The hits haven’t been solely in the bullpen, either, with the D-backs losing starter Corbin Burnes for the season due to Tommy John surgery. Eduardo Rodriguez also spent time on the IL, though is back in the rotation.
If there’s an area for the D-backs to attack this trade deadline if they end buying, it’s pitching.
But however it shakes out for the Diamondbacks, expect GM Mike Hazen and the franchise to be decisive and unafraid in the path they decide to take.
“It’s so tricky. First off, we have to see where we’re at as a team record-wise, where we are in the division, where we are in the Wild Card, how many teams we have in front of us and just be very realistic,” president and CEO Derrick Hall told Bickley & Marotta on Thursday.
“Too often, I think we as teams believe in ourselves a little more than we should. Or we think the switch is going to come on or we’re going to turn around, we’re going to go on a run. Yet, we have to be very, very realistic and we have to be smart here.”
