The Denver Broncos wrapped up their final practice of their offseason program, capping off what was an impactful period for Sean Payton and his initial roster.

Denver Broncos conclude successful offseason program

Thursday’s final minicamp practice was short, sweet, and to the point for Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. While players depart for the next five weeks before the start of what’s expected to be another tough training camp, Payton and his coaching staff believe they’ve done a great job of selling the offseason program to the roster, including an emphasis on strength and conditioning.

Player participation this spring has been nearly perfect regarding attendance and practices.

“We’re probably the only team that stays in Phase One for five weeks,” Payton said. “So, I would say the most important thing we do is lift, change our bodies, run, condition. We’ll have plenty of time for football. There’s a reason we spend five weeks and we don’t even go near [football]. I don’t want them pulling into the parking lot in April thinking they’re coming to football practice. I want them coming here knowing that they’re going to get a good workout in, good lift in. So that would be the most important thing.”

It’s evident when you look at several players, including Bo Nix, who looks bulkier this offseason. Wide receiver Troy Franklin added on five pounds of bulk as well, according to Payton.

Let’s talk about practice. Throughout OTAs and minicamp, the Broncos got plenty of reps offensively and defensively, but it’s hard to evaluate things when the physical element of playing in pads isn’t present. However, Payton shared how he and his staff have evaluated players during these practices.

“What’s real important is assignment and alignment,” Payton said. “That can keep a player from playing. We always talk about the three ways you’re being evaluated. Does the player know what to do? Is he trying to do what’s being coached? Then lastly, how well does he do it? So, assignment, alignment, technique. Those things.”

Payton shares update on Devaughn Vele

After not seeing second-year wide receiver Devaughn Vele at minicamp this week, Payton shared an update on a timeline of when we’ll see him back with the team.

“He’s going to be full-go start of training camp,” Payton said. “Everything is good. There may be one player, [WR A.T.] Perry that might go a week into training camp and then be ready depending on how the summer goes. Outside of that, we expect everyone back.”

It’s still unknown why he missed, but he’ll be back for camp, which is all that matters.

Rookie Pat Bryant and second-year receiver Troy Franklin have gotten plenty of reps in his absence as Denver’s wide receiver room looks to produce even more this upcoming season, as players are fighting for touches.

Denver Broncos news and notes

Safety P.J. Locke participated in team stretch and individual drills today after spending the first two days on the side field. He did not participate in team period. ILB Dre Greenlaw has made good progress on the side field and has been conditioning ahead of his expected debut for the start of training camp. RB J.K. Dobbins conditioned once again on Thursday as he continues to acclimate himself to the altitude. He’ll debut fully at the start of training camp. WR Troy Franklin caught an impressive pass from Bo Nix today in traffic during the lone team period. TE Caleb Lohner had arguably the most impressive catch of the day. I wore a hat, hoodie, and lathered myself in sunscreen.

Thursday put a bow on minicamp. I’ll be off to Ouray this weekend for my wedding, so stay tuned for some additional articles and recaps next week.
