Ukiah High School sophomore Amaya Upchurch advanced to the California State Finals of the Lions Club Student Speakers Contest, earning a shot at a $21,000 scholarship and statewide recognition.

Amaya claimed first place in the Regional competition held in San Marcos, where she delivered a compelling 10-minute memorized speech on Artificial Intelligence. The regional round included top student speakers from Northern California and the Bay Area, making it one of the most competitive stages in the contest.

“Amaya has worked incredibly hard for this moment,” said Corina Edwards, UHS speech and debate coach. “She’s researched, written, and rehearsed for months, and her success is a testament to her dedication and voice as a young leader.”

The Lions Club Student Speakers Contest begins each fall with a prompt announced in October. Students work through a series of elimination rounds at the club, zone, region, and district levels. The State Final took place May 31 in San Diego, where Amaya represented UHS and the entire North Coast region.

Ukiah High has a proud legacy of participation in the contest. The last UHS student to reach the State Finals was Indigo Funk, who won the top prize in 2017 with a speech on National Security vs. Privacy.

“This is an incredible opportunity open to all students willing to put in the work,” said Coach Edwards.
