Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm will all battle for glory as the 2025 US Open gets underway on Thursday.

Two-time US Open Bryson DeChambeau, who lifted the coveted trophy last year, is also among the 156-man field at Oakmont Country Club as he looks to defend his title.

Situated near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Oakmont is recognised as the oldest top-ranked golf course in the United States, and it’s known to provide a tough challenge with firm fairways, deep bunkers and extremely fast greens.

Defending champion DeChambeau is all too aware of the conditions, and believes it’s the ‘toughest golf course in the world’ right now, which makes you ‘question your sanity’.

While players are set to make their way around the historic cathedral of the game this weekend, a different American venue has been left in a state of disrepair in recent years, after being abandoned back in 2018.

Sitting 50 miles outside of Los Angeles, California, the former Golf Club of Vellano has been left to rot.

Designed by LIV Golf chief Greg Norman, the 18-hole private course opened in the Chino Hills of San Bernardino County in 2007, initially as part of a luxury condo and villa development.

Vellano, located in foothills set above 1000 feet of elevation, routed through dramatic elevation changes and native live oaks that featured panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Inland Empire valley.

Designer Norman, 70, has a net worth of $400million and has designed course across 34 countries and six different continents.

But Vellano, and its 45,000-square-foot clubhouse, now appears to be a rare misstep.

While the clubhouse also facilitated other activities such as swimming, billiards and general fitness, and boasted its own banquet hall, according to The Sun, the 269-acre site has become an ‘overgrown husk of a golf course’.

It struggled financially before being shut in May 2018 without warning, just 24 hours after members of the homeowners’ association informed their board they did not want residential development on Vellano.

In more recent years, the golf course has been put up for sale for nearly $18.5m (£13.7m).

The maintenance buildings were also put up for sale separately at $10.5m alone.

“There are even 175 properties on the outskirts of the course up for £4.2m ($5.6m), while empty lots are also up for sale for around £760,000 ($1m),” The Sun reported in September 2024.

Last month, Ontario-based MGR Real Estate announced the acquisition of the former Vellano Country Club, with founder and CEO Michael G. Rademaker sharing his vision for the site.

“We plan to enhance the existing clubhouse — currently leased to Wedgewood Weddings — while preserving its elegance and charm,” he said, per the Los Angeles Times.

“The property is gorgeous, and the community is wonderful.

“It would be a nice place to live and enjoy life. I would love to live there myself. I want my family and I to have a place in Vellano, embrace the community and blend in.”

Should he wish to get the golf course operational again as part of his plan to enhance the clubhouse, it’s fair to say Rademaker might also want to invest in plenty of lawn mowers.
