A Hispanic landscaper told police a man made racial slurs and threatened him before taunting him and taking off in his work truck on Monday in west Greeley.
Police arrested 32-year-old Cameron Schultz on suspicion of driving under the influence, third-degree motor vehicle theft, committing a bias-motivated crime and misdemeanor menacing, according to an affidavit for his arrest.
Around 5 p.m., Greeley police responded to a report of a disturbance with weapons at 71st Avenue and 19th Street. While en route, officers learned a man — later identified as Schultz — threatened to shoot another man before driving away in the victim’s work truck.
Shortly after, Schultz returned to the scene without the truck, got in his personal vehicle — a red SUV — and again drove away, police learned.
When speaking with the victim — a Hispanic man — he told officers that he was doing landscaping work in the area when Schultz pulled up in the SUV and began hurling racial slurs at him, according to the affidavit. Schultz also threatened the man, telling him, “If I want to, I can kill you right now,” he told officers.
As Schultz drove away, the man said he turned around and “made a gesture like he was pointing a firearm at him,” according to the affidavit.
Police say the landscaper told officers he was scared and ran back from the street to avoid any further confrontation.
The man then heard Schultz taunting him and revving the engine of his work truck, before driving away in the truck, according to the affidavit. Police did not indicate how much time passed before Schultz got in the man’s truck.
The man told police he left the keys in the truck because he had only planned on being in the area briefly, police said.
A few minutes later, the man said Schultz ran back into the area on foot, got into his red SUV and again drove away, according to the affidavit.
Later that evening, police found the man’s work truck parked in the 1900 block of 68th Avenue, according to the affidavit, less than 1,000 feet from where Schultz stole the truck.
As officers approached the vehicle, Schultz got out and fled to a nearby apartment. He almost immediately surrendered to officers when they followed him to the unit, according to the affidavit.
Schultz later told an officer that he “needed to go to jail for stealing the vehicle,” but said he had roughly five beers earlier in the day and didn’t remember exactly what he did, police wrote in the affidavit.
Schultz was booked into the Weld County Jail without incident. His bond hearing was set for 2 p.m. in Weld District Court.
