Trump: Military parade protesters will be met with 'very big force' ...Middle East

News by : (The Hill) -

President Trump on Tuesday warned potential protesters who are planning to attend Saturday’s military parade in Washington, D.C., that they would be met with “very big force.”

“If there’s any protester wants to come out, they will be met with very big force,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “For those people that want to protest, they will be met with very big force. And I haven’t even heard about a protest.”

Protests are planned around the nation on Saturday to counter the military parade, which coincides with the Army’s 250th anniversary. The event will feature tanks, flyovers and other military aircraft.

Trump will deliver remarks on Saturday evening. The event also falls on his 79th birthday.

Advocacy groups have organized “No Kings” events that are pushing back on what they say is creeping authoritarianism. Organizers have said there is not a "No Kings" event planned in Washington, D.C., however, though other counter-demonstrations are planned.

Trump's comments warning protesters come as his administration has mobilized the National Guard and other troops in Los Angeles to crack down on protests taking place in the city against immigration raids.

State and local officials have pushed back on the use of the National Guard, decrying it as an escalation.

Trump and other Republicans have highlighted instances of violence, such as protesters burning cars and throwing chunks of curbs at police, to justify the extraordinary response.

Democrats have largely condemned the violence while defending the right of Trump's critics to protest peacefully.

“Protest is a powerful tool – essential in the fight for justice," Former Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement on Sunday. “I continue to support the millions of Americans who are standing up to protect our most fundamental rights and freedoms."

The administration has mobilized some 4,000 California National Guard troops and 700 active duty Marines to Los Angeles, a move that the Pentagon said Tuesday will cost roughly $134 million.
