Dan Mullen hails UNLV opportunity, takes shot at Florida’s facilities ...Middle East

Dan Mullen is taking a shot to revive his head coaching career, taking the UNLV job to replace former Mizzou head coach Barry Odom this offseason. He recently dissected that move in an interview with ESPN, and he took a few shots at Florida in the process.

While Mullen had a growing desire to re-enter the coaching world, he was particularly selective about finding a job that met his current list of needs. One thing in particular was finding a program that did not require building “from the ground up.”

In fact, Mullen hailed UNLV’s facilities, saying they blow away “anything that was at Florida” prior to his departure. His final season in Gainesville came in 2021.

UNLV has the benefit of playing its home games in Allegiant Stadium, the home venue for the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders. Mullen also praised the program as being built to compete after falling just short of the College Football Playoff a season ago.

“The facility here blows away anything that was at Florida when I left. I didn’t want to have to come into a program that you had to build from the ground up,” said Mullen. “We have a great stadium in Allegiant Stadium. We were a game away from the College Football Playoff last year.

“So when you’re starting to check boxes, you know? Facilities? Check. Stadium? Check. Opportunity to win a championship immediately? Check. Great place to live? Check. Really good schools for my kids, I want my family to grow up here? Check.”

To Odom’s credit, he led the Rebels to a 20-8 record across 2 seasons, including an 11-3 record in 2024. It was the first season of double-digit wins for the program since 1984, and Odom’s tenure is responsible for 2 of the best 4 seasons in UNLV history.

Now, Mullen has a chance to rejuvenate his career with the program in a great spot to continue competing at a high level.
