A FRUSTRATED driver has pleaded for help after buying a brand new Lexus that’s left her in financial trouble.

Her mechanic spotted a suspicious detail that prevented the driver from using the new car.

After welcoming a baby into the family, Desire Godfrey decided it was probably time to upgrade her car, too.

“I had a baby, so I’m looking for something reliable for me and a baby,” she told CBS News.

The new mother was interested in purchasing a Lexus from The Reserve Auto Group in The Colony.

So, after finally securing the big-ticket purchase in May 2024, the Lancaster woman described her dealership experience as overall positive.

Drivers often gravitate to Lexus cars for their combination of luxury, reliability, and comfort.

The Japanese manufacturer is renowned for producing vehicles that offer a smooth ride, comfortable interiors, and good customer service experiences.

Lexus models are also known for their advanced technology, safety features, and stylish designs.

While primarily manufactured in Japan, some Lexus models are also produced in Canada and the United States.

Despite now owning the car of her dreams, Godfrey found herself at a Lexus dealership only six months later for an unexpected oil change.

When she arrived at the dealership, she was told her Lexus was not covered under a warranty and that her GAP insurance policy was never set up.

“They (Reserve Auto Group) never paid the warranty company the money they were supposed to pay to activate this warranty and this GAP insurance,” Godfrey said.

She filed a report with The Colony’s police department, citing that the costs of the warranty and insurance were included in her initial purchase.

It was revealed that Godfrey wasn’t the first to contact law enforcement with complaints about the Texas dealership.

Complaints have been filed by multiple other drivers starting in January.

Dealership Tips

Here are some expert tips when purchasing a car from a dealership lot:

1. Set your price: Ensure you’ve calculated your monthly budget before going to the lot. You should include the car’s loan payment, insurance costs, fuel, and regular maintenance. 2. Research: Make sure you know which cars you’re interested in test driving before you reach the dealership. 3. Pre-approval: Secure financing before you go to the dealership. Dealerships may give you a better interest rate if they are competing with an outside bank. 4. Test away: Get behind the wheel before making any payments. A car purchase will be worth thousands of dollars – drivers should ensure they like the drivetrain, steering feel, and comfort of the car before taking it off the lot 5. Haggle: Drivers should always try to negotiate the price. There are so many good cars on the American market – buyers have a strong hand when negotiating price.

A police investigation revealed that several others have been victims of the dealership’s fraudulent business tactics.

A second victim told CBS News that after buying a Lexus from the same dealership, she received a letter that stated the dealership never issued payment for the vehicle’s insurance or warranty.

Investigators found that Reserve Auto Group customers were writing separate checks for warranties and insurance policies, which the dealership allegedly never forwarded to the appropriate parties.

The police have not made any arrests regarding the allegations surrounding the dealership.

CBS News was able to reach the dealership’s owner, who is looking to set up an appointment with the drivers who weren’t issued insurance or warranties on their Lexuses.

Still, this leaves drivers like Godfrey with significant financial troubles.

“So nobody wants to refinance the loan. Nobody wants to give me GAP insurance,” she said.

“It’s just more so like I’m going to take it or leave it. If I wreck the car, then I would have to figure out a way to pay that car off.”
