Greeley police reported that a woman under the influence caused a scene at a McDonald’s earlier this month. Police said the woman threw change and a cup full of liquid at drive-thru employees before reaching for an officer’s gun while being detained.
Throughout the incident, the woman had two children in her vehicle, according to an affidavit for her arrest.
The Tribune is choosing not to name the suspect as part of an effort to only name suspects in cases the paper plans to follow up on throughout court proceedings.
Just before 9:30 p.m. June 1, Greeley police responded to reports of a woman assaulting employees at the 8th Avenue McDonald’s. Dispatch notes said the woman was in the lobby, but that she had driven to the restaurant in a red Cadillac.
When officers arrived, they reported that they smelled alcohol on her breath and that she staggered outside when asked to leave the lobby. Police reported that once outside, she got argumentative before telling officers she would walk home, leaving her vehicle in the parking lot.
Officers went to check her vehicle for alcohol in plain view, according to the affidavit, and when they approached, there were two children inside of the car. Both were OK, but visibly frightened, police said.
Officers also noticed a bottle of alcohol in the driver’s door pocket, according to the affidavit.
The woman was taken into custody, but police said she refused to get into the patrol car. While trying to have her comply, she grabbed for one officer’s gun in his holster, but was not able to get the gun out, according to the affidavit.
Once the woman was in custody and officers were retrieving the alcohol from the vehicle, police said she yelled that it was her car and said that she had been driving.
Police spoke with the manager of the McDonald’s, who said the woman came through the drive-thru and paid with cash. When the cashier handed her the change, she threw it at the cashier and pulled forward to the second window, according to the affidavit.
At the second window, she demanded to speak to the manager. When the manager got to the window, she threw a “full cup of liquid” at him. The manager said it “exploded” all over him and cut his arm, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit did not indicate what type of cup the woman threw, nor what was in the cup.
The woman then pulled into the parking lot on the other side of the building, where a manager approached her car to get her license plate number, police said. The woman got out and shoved him before following him inside and smacking his phone out of his hand, breaking the screen, according to the affidavit.
When the woman refused a breathalyzer, police said they learned her license had already been revoked during a different incident.
While in custody, officers requested an increased bond due to the woman’s “lack and willful disregard for her actions and the justice system,” county Judge Renee Doak released her on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond the next day. With a PR bond, a suspect’s signature serves as a promise to appear in court, costing her no money unless she misses proceedings.
She was arrested on suspicion of disarming an officer and attempting to commit a felony for reaching for an officer’s gun, as well as other misdemeanor charges for child abuse, assault, criminal mischief, harassment, driving under the influence and resisting arrest, according to the affidavit. The Weld County District Attorney’s Office has until Thursday to formally file the charges, according to Colorado court records.
