Opinion: The remarkable expansion of Helix Charter High’s college credit program ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

Helix Charter High School is proud to announce the remarkable expansion of its dual enrollment program for the 2024–2025 school year.

In collaboration with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, Helix now offers a comprehensive array of college-level courses taught directly on our campus—giving students the chance to earn transferable community college credits without ever leaving high school.

This bold step forward underscores our commitment to preparing students not only for college, but for life beyond. While Helix continues to maintain a robust and high-performing Advanced Placement (AP) program, our thriving dual enrollment program ensures broader access to college credits for a diverse population of students.

Growth by the numbers

For the 2024–2025 academic year, Helix hosted 33 college courses across 75 sections, with 2,625 student enrollments anticipated. Every course is taught in person by qualified instructors, resulting in an impressive 281.4 Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES)—all on our own campus.

These college courses span disciplines including English, History, Mathematics, Political Science, Economics, Chemistry, American Sign Language, Spanish, French, Music, Criminal Justice, and more.

Highlights of the 2024–2025 course offerings

● English & Literature: Students can take foundational composition (ENGL 120, 124), literature appreciation (ENGL 122), and even Chicano/a Literature (ENGL 236/ETHN 236).

● History & Social Sciences: Courses like U.S. History: Black Perspectives (HIST 181), Women in the Modern World (HIST 155), and Introduction to U.S. Government (POSC 121) provide context and critical insight into global and national issues.

● Mathematics & Science: With offerings from Precalculus (MATH 176) to Calculus III (MATH 281) and Chemistry prep (CHEM 120), Helix students are equipped to tackle rigorous STEM pathways.

● World Languages: Students can begin or continue studies in Spanish, French, or American Sign Language through multiple levels.

● Fine Arts: Music lovers benefit from theory, piano, and guitar courses that blend practical skills with academic depth.

● Career-Oriented Courses: Classes in Criminal Justice (AOJ 110/206), Business (BUS 109/195), and Political Science (POSC 121/124) open doors to career exploration and professional readiness.

Why dual enrollment matters

Unlike traditional high school classes or even AP courses, dual enrollment classes provide students with guaranteed transferable college credit upon successful course completion. These credits can be applied toward associate and bachelor’s degrees across California and beyond.

The structure of the program allows students to save time and money, gain confidence in navigating college-level coursework, and explore potential career paths while still in high school.

Equity and access at the heart

One of the most impactful aspects of the dual enrollment expansion is its accessibility.

By offering courses on the Helix campus during the school day, barriers such as transportation, cost, and schedule conflicts are eliminated. Every student—regardless of background or future plans—has the opportunity to participate in meaningful, credit-bearing academic experiences.

A vision for the future

As Helix continues to grow its academic programs, the dual enrollment initiative reflects our vision of preparing all students to graduate college- and career-ready. This effort wouldn’t be possible without the strong partnership with Grossmont College and the support of our dedicated educators, counselors, and community members.

We invite families and community stakeholders to celebrate this progress and continue supporting our students as they reach for new heights.
