In a recent career retrospective for Entertainment Tonight, the Grammy-winning artist behind such hits as "Conga," "Words Get In the Way," "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" and "Anything For You" revealed that back in 2019, she was approached by Jay-Z to perform in the famed Super Bowl LIV halftime show that featured fellow Latina superstarsJennifer Lopez and Shakira; Jay-Z was the producer of that halftime show.
But Estefan was not interested.
Indeed, Estefan closed out the Super Bowl XXVI halftime show in 1992 in Minnesota with her songs "Live for Loving You" and "Get On Your Feet." She later performed at the Miami-held Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999, taking the stage with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Stevie Wonder. Estefan performed "Oye!" and "Turn the Beat Around," then joined Wonder to end the show on "You'll Be Mine (Party Time)."
But it wasn't always so easy for Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, led by her husband Emilio Estefan. She told Classic Pop Mag in 2019 that he was told to "lose the singer" at one point when the group was still finding its way.
“We stayed true to who we were, but it was a fight. What I tell every young artist is, ‘They’re gonna try and change you,'" said Gloria in the interview. "One time, they even told Emilio, ‘Lose the singer!’ because it was the time of bands with male leads. Yes, Fleetwood Mac had two female singers, but they also had a male singer and, yes, there was Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, but that was a new thing in music."
