Wave’s Armstrong youngest to snag league honor on day club falls 2-1, ending unbeaten streak ...Middle East

The San Diego Wave’s unbeaten streak is no more.

The NWSL franchise suffered its third defeat of the season on Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium when it lost to the Seattle Reign 2-1.

Going into Friday, San Diego was unbeaten in its last six matches, a club record. The loss dropped the Wave’s record to 6-3-2, with 20 points.

Most of the significant action during this outing came relatively late in the second half. The Reign struck first, as midfielder scored her first-ever goal for Seattle during the game’s 67th minute, connecting with a right-footed shot into the net.

Then, during the match’s 75th minute, Wave winger Delphine Cascarino hit a header to tie the game. For a while, it looked as if the match might end in a draw, but near the end of regulation Seattle scored its second and final goal of the match when forward Emeri Adames scored via a left-footed shot.

During the post-match press conference, Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall lamented the fast turnaround for some of the club’s players who had been called up to represent their national teams during FIFA’s May/June international window.

Nine Wave players were called up and spent time away from the NWSL. Eidevall specifically mentioned defender Hannah Lundkvist, who traveled to Europe for a recent match against Denmark.

“The turnaround time is so quick,” Eidevall said. “Hannah played Tuesday night in Sweden. It’s a 16-hour flight. It was amazing that she could give us that performance in the minutes that she did.”

Other players who represented their home nations on Monday and Tuesday included goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and forward Adriana Leon (Canada); forward Maria Sánchez (Mexico); forward Kyra Carusa (Ireland); Cascarino (France); midfielder Gia Corley (Germany); center back Daniela Arias (Columbia), and defender Kennedy Wesley (U.S.).

Sheridan, Lundkvist and Leon were among the Wave’s starters Friday.

The score was knotted in a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes, plus two minutes of added stoppage time, as each club looked a little sluggish.

Seattle center back Jordyn Bugg, who was raised in El Cajon, started for the Reign and played the full match.

Next up, the Wave face the Houston Dash on the road June 13 before returning home for a June 22 contest against the Washington Spirit. After that, there will be a league-wide break from June 23 through the month of July.

San Diego resumes play Aug. 2 in a road match against the North Carolina Courage, a team the Wave defeated 5-2 at home on May 25.
