A teenage boy was behind bars Friday for allegedly shooting a 73-year-old man to death in City Heights.

The 17-year-old, whose name was withheld because he is a minor, is suspected of gunning down Diosado Gumbayan of San Diego.

A witness made a 911 call about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday to report hearing a gunshot in the 4600 block of Olive Street and seeing Gumbayan lying in the street with another person standing nearby, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Prior to the arrival of patrol officers, the suspected shooter, who was dressed all in black, left the area on foot, heading south in an alley off 46th Street, acting Lt. David Garren said.

Gumbayan was dead when they arrived. Officers searched the nearby canyon and surrounding streets for the person in black to no avail.

Homicide detectives investigated and identified the minor as the suspect. He was arrested near Euclid Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard in Talmadge on Thursday and booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of murder, Garren said.

Police have not disclosed a suspected motive for the slaying.
