Neyla Pekarek to perform at ‘Rattlesnake Kate’ June Celebration in Greeley ...Saudi Arabia

Neyla Pekarek, a Grammy-nominated cellist and vocalist, is set to perform at the Centennial Village Museum for a 100th anniversary celebration of “Rattlesnake Kate” at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the museum, 1475 A St., Greeley.

Pekarek is a former University of Northern Colorado student and a former member of the group The Lumineers. While at UNC, Pekarek learned Rattlesnake Kate’s story.

In 1925, Kate McHale Slaughterback was riding horses with her 3-year-old son, Ernie, near a lake near her farm in Hudson.

According to legend, she heard what she thought were hunters. However, when Slaughterback investigated, she saw migrating rattlesnakes. She shot at them until she ran out of bullets, but that only made things worse. Soon, the mother and son were surrounded by the snakes. She then grabbed a nearby sign that she used to kill the snakes.

In the end, she killed about 140 snakes. She later made a flapper-style dress out of their skins, which is currently on display at the Greeley History Museum.

Pekarek is set to perform with 40 musicians from her band and the Stratus Chamber Orchestra from Augustana Arts in Denver. The celebration at the museum is set to start at 10 a.m. There will be live musical performances, historical demonstrations and games, costumed interpreters and other family-friendly events throughout the day.

“Kate was a very tough and fearless woman, experiencing many of the same feelings and issues a modern woman might face — being misunderstood, unheard or unseen,” Pekarek said in a news release. “She was ahead of her time as a feminist and lived outside of what women were expected to be. I can’t stop thinking about her and sharing her story with people.”

Tickets to the 7 p.m. performance by Pekarek are free, but you need to go to tinyurl.com/yc6spst8 to reserve them. There will be standing room only availability, too.
