Bradley Wiggins has experienced as many highs as he has lows in his life.
The 2012 Olympic games were his signature moment in what was a glittering cycling career consisting of four gold medals, the last of which came at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Bradley Wiggins has fought back from a difficult period of drug addictionPrior to the London games, Wiggins won the prestigious Tour de France, becoming the only person in history to win the Paris–Nice, the Tour de Romandie, the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France in a single season.
But the highest of highs later became the lowest of lows as Wiggins’ demons got the better of him as his career tailed off.
The Olympic champion battled with cocaine addition as a means to fill the void left by his successful career.
It stemmed from a childhood without his father, whom he later reconnected with.
A mix of tragedy and personal heartbreak took over his thoughts leading to the darkest moments of his adult life.
Wiggins is currently writing a book on his post-cycling life where he candidly lifts the lid on the triggers for his addiction and a love-hate relationship with the sport.
The book titled ‘The Chain’ is set for release later this year.
“For the last six months, I’ve been writing a book. It’s been quite a cathartic experience. This is not a book about cycling, it’s a book about my life since cycling,” Wiggins told talkSPORT.
“My father left home when I was a kid and I met him again for the first time when I was 19. He was my hero and still is to this day.
“I took up cycling in the hope of emulating him and one day meeting him.

“It’s been well documented that I was sexually abused by my first coach from the age of 13 to 16 and that was part of the reason why I hated cycling,” he added. “All the things that happened after cycling were what I blamed on my involvement in it.
“It’s been quite a thing unpacking all of that for this book and the main reason for doing that is because I want to be the teller of my own story.”
Wiggins, who previously labelled himself a functioning addict, revealed that his son feared finding him dead.
A failure to break his cocaine habits even required the support of disgraced former cyclist Lance Armstrong who became concerned for Wiggins’ welfare.
Wiggins has now been clean for 12 months and admits to have rekindled his love for the sport he once blamed for the issues in his life.

“It’s very closely linked with the relationship I had with my dad who was a track cyclist of high esteem. I got into cycling because of him.
“All of the events that subsequently happened around cycling and because of my involvement in cycling, it left me with quite a few issues I had to deal with when I stopped cycling that I blamed cycling for.
“Having unpacked all that and worked on myself and gone through a lot of extensive therapy, I come full circle with it now and being back on the bike has been a big part of my healing process.”
Wiggins continued: “I’m incredibly proud of everything I did in cycling and there was a time when that wasn’t the case.
“Being at the Olympic games and winning the Tour de France, it’s only now that I realised what we all achieved.”
