CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association's (CIAA) marquee event won’t be returning to the Queen City anytime soon.
The Charlotte Regional Visitor’s Authority confirmed through a joint letter that the Division II conference's men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be held elsewhere from 2027-29. Baltimore, which has hosted the historically Black college event since 2021, also was a finalist.
The city of Charlotte partnered with the CRVA and Charlotte Sports Foundation to place a bid for the tournaments that were once a local staple. But being able to lock down the Spectrum Center in early March was key in the city securing the bid.
"We understand the CIAA considered several factors in making their decision, including the alignment of proposed dates with their preferred event schedule," the bidding organizations said in a joint statement. "When the CIAA requested 2027 dates in early 2025, our primary venues were already committed due to previously scheduled programming — a reflection of Charlotte’s growing momentum as a premier host city."
In addition to the Charlotte Hornets' schedule, in 2028, the arena is the site for the ACC Men’s Tournament. Bojangles' Coliseum, home of the Charlotte Checkers hockey team, also has been used as a tournament site. The event annually brings 60,000 fans to the host city.
"We remain hopeful that Charlotte will have the opportunity to welcome the tournament back in the future," the statement continues.
