The fire stemmed from a two-vehicle collision just after 4 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The Oakland Fire Department said the blaze broke out about 400 feet into the tunnel.

All traffic was stopped in Bore 1 and Bore 2 while crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the scene.

The blaze was extinguished by 4:55 p.m.

The driver of the car that caught fire and a passenger were picked up and driven through the tunnel by another motorist, according to the CHP. No injuries were reported.

Bore 2 was open again as of 6:30 p.m. but Bore 1 remained closed. There was no estimated time to reopen the roadway. The CHP advised motorists to expect delays and use alternate routes to avoid the area.
