The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has identified a man who was the subject of a freeway chase on Sunday that began and ended in North County.
Matthew Alms, 43, failed to yield during a traffic stop after law enforcement had already received calls about someone behaving in a suspicious way with a possible rifle in their vehicle.
“The pursuit was discontinued after several miles in the city of Vista in the interest of public safety,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement.
The department was able to track his vehicle with an ASTREA helicopter, the statement added.
“Alms drove through Carlsbad, Vista, and Oceanside before returning to Fallbrook, where tire deflation devices were deployed. The vehicle became disabled in the 5400 block of Rainbow Heights Road.”
Alms initially refused to get out of his car, but surrendered after about 30 minutes.
Medics from the fire department tended to the suspect, who was reportedly tased by deputies.
