Cox Communications on Friday announced that an aide to former City Councilmember Chris Cate has been promoted to director of government affairs for California.
Allen Young has served as Cox’s manager of government affairs since September 2022, with responsibility for San Diego and East County. In his new role, Young will guide Cox’s strategic advocacy efforts at the state level, aligning the company’s priorities with key legislation and public policy. He also will retain responsibility for San Diego.
“Allen’s exceptional contributions and dedication to the company and its internal and external stakeholders, coupled with his state legislative experience made him an ideal candidate for this role,” said Chanelle Hawken, San Diego market vice president for Cox. “I look forward to continuing to work with him in this new role to continue to advance our business in San Diego and statewide.”
Young has extensive experience in local and state government. Prior to joining Cox, he served as deputy chief of staff and director of policy for Cate. He also served as committee consultant for the city’s Budget Committee. He also previously served as a legislative aide in the California State Senate.
Young currently sits on the board of several San Diego nonprofits, including the San Diego Foundation and the Asian Business Association of San Diego.Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Young graduated from UC San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with an emphasis on American politics and a minor in economics.
Cate also has a new position. Last week he was named the next president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.
