ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) -- An Antioch neighborhood is mourning the death of a 3-year-old child who was killed in an accidental shooting. The toddler died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Tuesday, a 911 caller told the Antioch Police Department.
The toddler was in a house on Clearbrook Road near Lone Tree Way when he somehow accessed a loaded gun, police said. Someone called 911 at 6 p.m. Tuesday "reporting that a three-year-old had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot," APD Lt. Whitaker wrote.
Neighbors told KRON4 that the boy frequently stayed in the house with his grandparents on weekdays, and his mother picked him up on Fridays.
Neighbor Linda Corbetta, who friends with the toddler's family, heard the gunshot. "I was in the backyard and I heard a 'pop,' which I assumed was a gun. I heard a woman say, 'Oh no! Oh God no!'"
Police officers are seen at an Antioch home where a toddler was fatally shot on April 8, 2025.Soon after, emergency responders arrived and carried the toddler's body away from his grandparent's house.
"He was limp. His little head was rolled back. It's shocking. We couldn't believe that this could happen, but it did. You don't leave a loaded gun around, ever. I'm not criticizing them because they are beautiful people and horrible mistakes happened. I'm sure they are going to be in hell for a long time. Something likes this shatters your world," Corbetta said.
Video from the scene shows nearly a dozen police officers and Contra Costa County firefighters went to the house to investigate how the tragedy happened.
"At this time, it appears to be an accidental shooting. This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are with the family and all those affected during this difficult time," Lt. Whitaker wrote.
The Antioch Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) and Violent Crimes Unit detectives are still investigating.
Another longtime neighbor told KRON4, "It was awful -- just awful. My heart goes out to the family. They are such a nice family and to have something like that happen is devastating."
Police did not say if any arrests will be made.
According to the California Attorney General's Office, a person can be charged with a misdemeanor or a felony if they keep a loaded firearm on a premises where a child obtains and fires it.
The AG's website warns, "There is no such thing as being too careful with children and guns. Never assume that simply because a toddler may lack finger strength, they can't pull the trigger. A child's thumb has twice the strength of the other fingers. When a toddler's thumb 'pushes' against a trigger, invariably the barrel of the gun is pointing directly at the child's face. Never leave a firearm lying around the house."
Accidental child shootings can be prevented by using firearms safety devices and storing guns, unloaded, in a locked container, the Attorney General's Office said. Ammunition should be stored in a location separate from the firearm.
