After a lengthy closure to make several upgrades and renovations, the Town of Chapel Hill reopened the Homestead Aquatic Center on Monday.
The local government announced the week prior that the pools and building would be reopening for the first time since October, as several infrastructure replacements and repairs were finished. The chief change is the center’s heating and cooling system has been upgraded to provide better humidity and temperature control to the facility. The town took the closure as an opportunity to also deeply clean the flooring, improve the locker rooms’ shower spaces, drain the pool to complete repairs, and pressure-wash the pool deck among other projects.
According to a post shared on Facebook and Instagram by Chapel Hill’s Parks and Recreation Department, several swimmers were already taking advantage of the renovations on Monday.
“We’re super excited that this project is complete,” said Mayor Jess Anderson to 97.9 The Hill in the prior week. “We know we have our lap-swimmers who have been counting the days [to the reopening], so everyone should come on out.”
The Homestead Aquatic Center, located at 300 Aquatic Drive in Chapel Hill, is the town’s largest swimming facility — offering a 10-lane, 25-yard lap pool alongside a recreation warm-water pool with ramp access. Swimmers can purchase 20-visit, six-month or annual passes to access the facility, or pay a daily visiting fee upon arrival. Hours for the center range from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays; and 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. More general pool information and details on the facility can be found on the Town of Chapel Hill’s website.
