PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez became the second player in franchise history to blast three home runs in the first two games of a season on Friday, joining Luis Gonzalez in 2001, per MLB researcher Sarah Langs.
Suarez homered in his first at-bat on Opening Day, and on Friday he stepped back up to the plate and crushed two baseballs off Chicago Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon. The first came in the second inning and traveled a projected 436 feet, beating out his 430-footer on Thursday. His second of the night in the fourth frame went a mere 418 feet.
Both came with designated hitter Pavin Smith on base, the second giving Arizona a 4-1 lead.

Suarez came back up in the fifth and hit a ball to deep left field off reliever Eli Morgan, but it died at the warning track.
The veteran hit multiple home runs twice last season, including a three-homer game against the Washington Nationals. He also hit a blast in Game 162, so he’s on a three-game home run streak.
Suarez was nearly cut by the Diamondbacks during an awful first half at the plate, but he completely turned his season around. He hit for a .942 OPS with 20 home runs in the second half to end the year with 30 round-trippers.
