Hillsborough residents are now able to buy discounted rain barrels as part of a program launched by the town’s Stormwater and Environmental Services Division.
The barrels sold through the program (the Ivy model from Raleigh-based company Rain Water Solutions) are 42.5 inches tall and hold 50 gallons of water. They are made of 50% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable. While the retail cost of one of these barrels is $153, they are available through the program for $75.
In a press release, the division touted rain barrels as a simple method of collecting rainwater for irrigation, which is an effective way to conserve water, reduce stormwater runoff, and save money on water bills.
Heather Fisher, the Stormwater Program Coordinator, encouraged residents to use rain barrels as often as possible.
“When using a rain barrel, the greatest benefits are achieved by making it a habit and regularly using water from rain barrels for irrigation,” she said. “When you use the water for your plants, it soaks into the ground where natural processes can remove pollutants, and then your rain barrel is empty and ready for the next rain.”
The discounted barrels can be purchased at this link, and pickup from the Hillsborough Town Hall Campus can be scheduled here.
