The Greeley City Council proclaimed March as Brain Injury Awareness Month last week, bringing awareness to an overlooked and underfunded medical condition that affects about 5,000 Coloradans each year.
With Colorado ranked ninth in the nation for deaths due to traumatic brain injury, the council dedicated this month to the issue to promote awareness of the consequences, causes, treatments and prevention of acquired brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries can bring a lifetime of physical, cognitive and behavioral challenges.
“Adequate intervention and support greatly increases their quality of life and enables the individuals with brain injuries to live healthy and happy lives connected to a caring community like Greeley,” Mayor John Gates said.
Though the leading cause of brain injuries in Colorado is falls, injuries can also be the result of motor vehicle collisions, assaults, sports-related injuries, occupational injuries and even opioid overdoses. Any sort of bump, blow, jolt or penetration of the head can potentially lead to this life-altering injury.
Adeo Executive Director Carrie Olenick and other representatives of the Greeley-based organization were present to receive the proclamation. Adeo, formerly known as the Greeley Center for Independence, was founded in 1977 and advocates for people facing various health challenges. It began focusing on brain injuries in 2004, offering full support for major life activities for people living with the residual impact of a brain injury, including housing, wellness and opportunities for connection, according to the website.
Gates specifically thanked Adeo for their work with people who have suffered brain injuries and their work to raise awareness of the issue during the proclamation.
“I appreciate how much this city and this community really embraces creating whole, healthy lives for all of its citizens,” Olenick said. “Especially for those that often our society wants to push to the shadows.”
