Texas was able to sneak into the NCAA Tournament this season, helping SEC basketball set a new March Madness record with 14 teams in the final bracket.
Unfortunately, the Longhorns made a brief stay in the postseason. Texas fell to Xavier, 86-80, on Wednesday night after once holding a 13-point lead in that game. Tre Johnson led all scorers with 23 but the Longhorns allowed the Musketeers to shoot 55% from the floor.
Coming out of that First Four game, it looks like Texas will be in the market for a new head coach this offseason. According to a report from college basketball insider Jeff Goodman, the Longhorns are planning to move on from head coach Rodney Terry after his 2nd season as the full-time head coach in Austin.
Fans will remember that Terry originally came to Texas as an assistant on Chris Beard’s initial coaching staff during the 2021-22 season. After Beard’s suspension and subsequent firing in 2022-23, Terry assumed the role of interim coach, posting a 22-8 record in that post and leading the Longhorns to the Elite Eight before losing to Miami.
Rodney Terry took over after Chris Beard was fired midseason a couple years ago and took Texas to the Elite Eight to keep the full-time job. But sources have told @TheFieldOf68 that Texas is likely to make a move on Terry after two straight years of barely making the NCAA…
— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanHoops) March 20, 2025Unfortunately, the 2 seasons under Terry as the permanent head coach have not come close to that level of success. The Longhorns earned a 7-seed last year and were bounced from the second round by Tennessee, and the program was fortunate to crack the final bracket this year.
Texas was just 19-15 overall and posted a 6-12 record in league play. Part of that has to do with the brutal nature of the SEC, but that could also be the driving factor in looking to make a change.
With the SEC serving as the predominant program in all of college basketball, the Longhorns might be unwilling to give Terry any extra time to get things straightened out. It looks like we’ll find out in the near future.
