The BCCI has made a significant change in the IPL 2025 rules, among a slew of others. For the upcoming season, the captains of franchises won’t have to suffer in lieu of over-rate offences. The board has announced that the captains will no longer face match bans, due to slow over-rate, according to a report in Cricbuzz. Instead they will attract demerit points, with a ban under only extreme circumstances.

Changes Galore Announced at IPL 2025 Captain’s Meet

“The captain will be penalised with demerit points but will not face a match ban for the slow over-rate,” a source told the publication. The level 1 offence will see a match fee penalty of 25 to 75 per cent, along with demerit points, which will be active for three years. A Level 2 offence will lead to serious consequences, and will result in four demerit points.

“For every 4 demerit points accumulated, the match referee can impose a penalty, either in the form of a 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. These demerit points could potentially lead to a match ban in the future,” a source in the know said. “But for slow overrate it won’t be a match ban (immediately).”

After Hardik Pandya Ban, BCCI Changes Slow Over-rate Rule

The rule comes at a time when MI skipper Hardik Pandya is already facing a one-match ban, and will miss their IPL 2025 opening match against Chennai Super Kings on March 23. Earlier, Rishabh Pant had to miss a tie for DC, against RCB in IPL 2024.

Apart from that, during the captain’s meet for IPL 2025, the impact sub rule was also discussed. For now, the rule is here to stay and will only be reviewed after the 2027 edition. “The IPL will continue to implement the Impact Player rule, allowing teams to substitute one player during a match, at least until 2027,” a source has informed Cricbuzz.
