Massive west-side complex would be ‘Greeley’s Greatest Folly’
If the city of Greeley contributes to the Martin Lind High Plains Disneyland, they will be honored with a marble plaque in front of it with the words “Greeley’s Greatest Folly.”
Several editorials have been written recently pointing out the pitfalls of building a huge recreational complex on West U.S. 34. Those by Bob Folbrecht and Gary Bracken very well point out the adverse effects of land use. Likewise unwise use of water. And who will pay for all the infrastructure requirements? U.S. 34 already has severe traffic problems, and the proposed sports complex will make matters much worse. Interstate 25 can’t even handle the present traffic demands.
Something of this nature needs an environmental impact statement. Has anyone done an honest poll to see how many people in Greeley and Weld County want this complex? Just because something can be done does not mean it should be done. Just because someone can secure land for a project does not mean it should be built upon. The number of short term construction jobs it will provide should not be a factor in the decision-making process. Actually I think this is a boondoggle. How so? It’s defined as it wastes money and time on an unnecessary or questionable project. “The only guarantees are higher taxes and bureaucratic boondoggling.” Bigger is not always better. Often less is more. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Actually looking before you bite will serve you better.

It’s all about controlling women
Dear editor, I will buy you and a citizen of Greeley dinner to have a chat to explain some thinking that is really coming to a head. That citizen would be one who does not agree that a woman has a choice about what happens to her body. One who wants to abolish abortion rights or prevent women from using any form of birth control. Men, of course, have access to performance-enhancing drugs, which are covered under most company health insurance.
My dinner-time question: How can you be against a woman’s right to choose perhaps to bring another life into this world and stand by while Trump and Musk are cutting programs that will put parents out of work, directly affecting children; eliminating food programs for hundreds of thousands of children; eliminating the department that oversees the equity of an education, a cornerstone of our democracy; eliminating the health organizations and health coverage for these children such as Medicaid and USAID; eliminating early childhood and preschool programs for our most needy children; eliminating college tuition assistance programs; and, most ignorant, deriding life-saving vaccinations?
So that means that it is a good thing to bring every child into this world until they are in need of help growing up healthy and educated in America. You want the babies, not the toddlers. You want the babies, not the school-aged children. You want the babies, not young adults who need assistance attaining job training and/or a degree. You want the babies, yet you support Trump and Musk, who are taking away how our fellow citizens make a living to feed those babies.
Is this not hypocrisy to the nth degree? It’s all about controlling women. It’s all about controlling us all. It’s all so shameful!
