Newcastle won their first trophy since 1969 as a consummate performance shocked an exhausted Liverpool at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup.
Alexander Isak then had a goal disallowed early in the second half after Bruno Guimaraes was ruled offside, but made up for it moments later by thrashing home a Jacob Murphy knock-down to double a lead Newcastle never looked likely to surrender.
But this was far too little, far too late, as Eddie Howe, Burn and Isak etched their names into Geordie folklore to end football’s most infamous trophy drought in swashbuckling style.
Jarell Quansah: Given an incredibly tough assignment in replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold and unsurprisingly did not make an adequate replacement. Run ragged by Livramento. 5/10
Virgil van Dijk: Struggled to exert his usual control but still had some strong moments. 7/10
Ryan Gravenberch: Moved back to centre-back to replace Konate, another player who looks burned out by this season’s exploits. Not as accurate as usual in his passes and struggled for any real progression. 5/10
Mohamed Salah: A sharp cross just before half time was his only first-half contribution, then only had three touches in the first 25 minutes of the second. A shockingly poor performance in a tough week for him. 3/10
Luis Diaz: The most threatening of Liverpool’s attackers, against an astonishingly low bar. Chased lost causes relentlessly. 5/10
Substitutes
Darwin Nunez: 6/10
Harvey Elliott: 7/10
Newcastle player ratings
Nick Pope: A stunning one-armed save to stop Jones bringing one back and controlled his area. 7/10
Fabian Schar: Didn’t quite hit the heights of his partner but a perfectly solid final performance. 7/10
Tino Livramento: Powerful running down the left unsettled Liverpool and kept Salah shockingly quiet. 8/10
Sandro Tonali: A sharp first-half shot wide but got bogged down in a scrappy midfield battle, including some lax passing. Did his defensive work dutifully. 6/10
Jacob Murphy: Almost sold his defence short with an aimless header back to Nick Pope on 35 minutes but more than made up for it with a smart knock-down for Newcastle’s second and excellent running. 8/10
Harvey Barnes: Worked incredibly hard defensively but Livramento got the attacking fruits of his labour. 6/10
Callum Wilson: 6/10
Joe Willock: N/A
