The 87th Annual Redwood Region Logging Conference continues in Ukiah this week with events hosted through Saturday at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds.

Children flocked to the fairgrounds Thursday for Education Day, which featured highlights including the Conservation Ambassadors’ Wild Things show starring a reindeer, rattlesnake and Great Horned Owl.

Also on display for train enthusiasts of all ages was the steam engine Mountain Quarries 202, a train that was riding on 300-feet of tracks set up by both the Timber Heritage Association, based in Humboldt County, and Roots of Motive Power, a Willits-based group which “began in 1982 as a loosely organized group of friends in the timber industry who shared a love of local history and the antique machinery that shaped it.”

The steam engine and other “Historical Logging Displays and demonstrations” will be offered throughout the day Saturday, as well as the Wild Things show and demonstrations by Professional Wood Carvers.

Special events on Saturday include the John Iversen Invitational Lumberjack Competition beginning at 9 a.m., the Log Loader Competition at 1 p.m. with the “Past President’s Axe Throw to follow the John Iversen Invitational.”

The Redwood Region Logging Conference describes itself as “Northern California’s largest timber-focused event, held annually each March and rotating between Ukiah and Eureka as the host venue,” explaining that it is “committed to providing quality educational opportunities to local students,” with a live auction held during its banquet each year to raise funds “to continue our educational goals. Proceeds fund events such as Education Day, and Career Day for high school and college students to explore employment and career opportunities in the Timber Industry, orchestrating High School Forestry Contests where potential forestry students compete on both individual and team levels, and the Boots on the Ground program for high school seniors.”

The RRLC describes the Boots on the Ground educational program as “designed for high school seniors aiming to enter the workforce directly after graduation. This program provides students with a close-up experience of the Timber Industry, offering them a day to tour active logging sites and mills while connecting with potential employers. After completing the event, students who secure employment within the Timber Industry can receive up to $500 to reimburse their first pair of work boots. In 2022, 40 seniors from Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino Counties attended one of two Boots on the Ground events. This program is held every spring in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties. Interested students should reach out to their Career Tech, Agriculture Teacher, or Advisor for details. Space is limited and prioritized for seniors considering careers in the Timber Industry. Registration forms will be available in March 2025.”
