The Cache la Poudre River is 126 miles long and serves more than just a pretty view for those biking, running or walking along its trail. The river provides multiple uses for Northern Colorado businesses and residents.

The Poudre, which is more than 13,000 years old, is vital for the area’s present and future.

On Friday at the 10th anniversary Poudre River Forum at the Aims Community College Welcome Center in Greeley, speakers highlighted the river’s importance to the region, as well its history and future.

“I think the main takeaway is understanding how we all contribute to the success of the river,” said Sabrina Stoker, the executive director of the Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area. “How we all work together. It’s collaboration. It’s how we do this. It’s less about the conflict; it’s more about the collaboration.”

Stoker pointed to the study-action group the Poudre Runs Through It for its continued work and studying of the river. The group is comprised of water leaders studying the impacts and happenings of the river as a part of the national heritage area.

In March 2009, Congress officially deemed the river as a national heritage area, where natural, cultural and historic resources foster a cohesive nationally important landscape.

Friday’s forum started at 8 a.m. and ended just before 3 p.m. In the final event, some of the members of the national heritage area hosted a question-and-answer session. Booths surrounded the meeting room where the members spoke, including a booth representing the city of Greeley.

Kristen Wilkinson, an environmental planner for Greeley, was overseeing the booth. She marveled at the work being done on the river that was discussed at the forum and the continued partnerships needed to maintain it for future generations.

“I think what’s amazing about this event is the all of the diverse industries that are represented here,” Wilkinson said. “You’ve got everyone from agricultural to municipalities, folks who are managing the water, using the water, breweries who use the water for their operations. It just kind of highlights how the river is central to all of our communities.”

The forum also addressed the infrastructure of the river and its uses in the upper, middle and lower end of the basin, Stoker said. The continued collaboration to help maintain “our hard-working river” was another important theme, she added.
