(KRON) -- A North Bay high school principal has been placed on leave after a student was stabbed on campus last week — the second stabbing at the school this year.
Woman grabbed off street, dragged into car in brazen daylight kidnapping in OaklandThe attack happened last Tuesday at Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa. The 15-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Jesse Trejo, the victim’s father, said he doesn’t feel safe sending his son Christopher back to school. Christopher recently returned home from the hospital and is recovering from several surgeries.
“He’s getting better, but someone has to be with him 24 hours to make sure that he doesn’t get panic attacks,” Trejo said.
This was the second stabbing this school year and the seventh student in the past two years to be violently attacked in the Santa Rosa County School District.
Earlier this week, Trejo received an alert from the school about police arresting another student with a weapon. When officers responded to Elsie Allen, the student ran but was eventually taken into custody.
“I was scared because I’m like, it’s been only five, six, seven days and another kid is armed. It’s unsafe,” Trejo said.
On Thursday, the district confirmed to KRON4 that Elsie Allen Principal Gabe Albavera was placed on leave the day after the stabbing. No other details were provided.
Trejo said he doesn’t believe the school handled the incident properly, noting that no one from the school ever called him.
“It took an hour or hour 20 minutes to find out what happened and where my son was,” he said.
In 2020, the school board discontinued the school resource officer program that had been in place for two decades. Now, the district and police are working on a plan to bring SROs back.
“They develop a rapport and build trust with students, and when that exists, the students are more likely to go to that SRO to give them information about potential fights or acts of violence,” said Santa Rosa Police Sergeant Patricia Seffens. “Students with weapons, bullying, harassment.”
Once Christopher fully recovers, Trejo plans to transfer him to another school in the district. He said the district has provided services to help Christopher receive therapy.
