LOVELAND, Colo. (KDVR) — The Loveland Police Department has started using mobile radar equipment to help slow drivers down near problem areas.
In a short period of time many people were caught speeding in one school zone.
The speed limit near Lucile Erwin Middle School during certain hours is 20 mph. Loveland Police shared photos of the mobile radar unit in the area. There are a lot of children that walk to school and use cross streets. The speed limits vary across roadways in the area.
Why Denver police photo enforcement vehicles park where others can’tThe new radar setup includes a warning sign that the radar is being used to monitor traffic.
In just one 30-minute time frame, the unit clocked 50 vehicles going at least eight mph over the speed limit.
The number of people driving above the speed limit was surprising.
“It was kind of mind-blowing. What the public is telling us is the truth and we need to be up there and enforcing the speed limit,” said Jeff Mayers, the Loveland Police Department Sergeant.
Mayers gave FOX31 an up-close look at the brand new unit, which is similar to ones that are used in places like Denver. The SUV has high-tech cameras mounted inside along with lights that flash when a driver is detected speeding.

So far, no citations have been written, just warnings, but tickets will be issued to drivers in the near future.
FOX31 also spoke off-camera to the parent of a Lucile Erwin student, who said she’s glad tougher traffic enforcement measures are being taken.

“It can be pretty hectic. People roll through here usually not paying attention to the speed limit sign,” Velloso said.

“It's definitely busier than it used to be. I'm actually a Loveland native, so I have definitely seen an increase in traffic,” said Ungerman.
Loveland police said the main goal is to try to get traffic to slow down. Citations will include both photos and videos of drivers caught by the mobile radar unit.
