COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Ohio State University's Board of Trustees approved all agenda items in its Wednesday meeting, including establishing the Salmon P. Chase Center as a tenure initiating unit, major construction projects and making its position known in the changing higher education landscape.

There were 15 items on the agenda, but much of the meeting was spent celebrating Ohio State athletes. Members of the football and spirit and dance teams attended the meeting and were honored by the trustees. Both teams won national championships this year.

The trustees heard from coaches and players from both teams, and the football national championship trophy took center stage in the meeting room. Both the trustees and President Ted Carter applauded the teams, but Carter also noted athletes' excellence off the field. They celebrated OSU's perfect academic progress rate of 1,000, tying Harvard University for the best athletic academics rating in the country.

Trustees also affirmed their commitment to Carter's leadership, particularly as Ohio State navigates emerging legislative requirements. Carter confirmed that the university is currently evaluating its work with DEI. Carter said he had spoken with both Ohio senators and was optimistic about where the university was headed.

"A strong and competitive Ohio State means a strong and competitive Ohio," Carter said.

In accordance with Carter's goal to become a leader in a new era of higher education, the trustees approved the Salmon P. Chase Center, a state-mandated "intellectual diversity" center. The center will host courses on America and the Constitution, as well as their impacts on society.

The trustees also approved several major construction projects, including a new roof for the Schottenstein Center. They approved eight construction contracts in total, totaling $46.2 million. Among them were a new bus technology testing facility, a dental simulation space for dental students and a new emergency response radio system to connect Wexner Medical Center facilities.

Ohio State also approved the sale of 23.5 acres on West Dublin Granville Road just north of the Don Scott Airport. The land has not undergone any significant development, according to the Trustees notes, and it is not clear who will buy it.

Other decisions included naming three internal spaces, several personnel adjustments, approving the University Foundation report and amending the Ohio State Energy utility system capital improvements plan for fiscal year 2025 to add two new utility system improvements.
