Two Northridge High School seniors will return to a Technology Student Association national competition in June after qualifying for a second year in a row.
David Rivera Jr. and Jeff Nguyen, led by their technology teacher Jim Corbett, won first place out of 70 Colorado teams in technology problem-solving at the 2025 TEAMS state-level competition hosted by the Technology Student Association.
TEAMS, or Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science, is an annual science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition for middle and high school students. It began on Jan. 15 and concluded Tuesday.
Competitors in teams of two to four complete three parts at the state competition, including designing and building solutions to an engineering challenge, using math and science skills to solve real-world engineering challenges and researching and writing an in-depth essay submitted electronically, according to the Technology Student Association website.
This year’s engineering challenge involved suspending two pickleball balls as far out from each other as possible while keeping them in the air, Corbett said. Rivera and Nguyen came out at the top with a score of 91 inches.
“It’s fantastic to see our students compete and win against some of the best engineering minds in the state,” Corbett said. “Jeff and David knew they had to take risks and push their limits to perform well and win and they came through when it counted.”
Both students are a part of Northridge High School STEM Academy, which has three pathways: the Academy of Math and Science, the Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Information Technology. The school recently launched an aerospace engineering course as part of the Greeley-Evans School District’s Career and Technical Education engineering pathway.
At the 2024 state competition, the two Northridge students placed second and went to the national competition in Orlando, Florida. Out of 120 teams from across the nation, and a few international teams, Rivera and Nguyen took home second place, according to Corbett.
The local team will have a second chance to compete for Best-in-Nation at the 2025 National TEAMS Competitions between June 27 and July 1 in Nashville, Tennessee.
