COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- A young central Ohio entrepreneur is using her social media platform to try and save a struggling business.

Lauren Alexander, the owner of Lauren Alexander Designs, relies on Joann to make her products.  Last week, Joann announced plans to close more than 500 stores – including almost all Ohio locations.

Alexander, 22, said she started Lauren Alexander Designs in 2021 to promote sustainability in a cute way.

“We make reusable products for the most disposed items in your home,” Alexander said.

The company makes reusable non-paper towels, washable sponges and more to reduce waste and promote sustainability. Alexander said the business is her full-time job, making every product herself with just about any design.

“Fabric is the most crucial point of all of our business,” Alexander said, adding that the majority of fabric she uses comes from Joann stores.

Alexander said she uses around 500-800 yards of fabric every week.

“We tweak, depending on what our needs are, but thousands of yards over a month span," Alexander said.

Alexander said through her business boom there have been some nerve wracking moments, including when she watched Joann file Chapter 11 bankruptcy, then last week announced they are closing almost all Ohio stores.

“I would either have to up my prices or find their suppliers and that, it's really a very tricky area to work in,” she said. “We have no idea what to do with the closure of and we are very hopeful that they'll at least have some stores open or their online sector will remain ongoing, but it would definitely change our business significantly. I was feeling very stressed at the moment, but I felt like there was something that we could do on social media.”

She took to her Instagram account, posting updates about the company. Some videos currently have more than one million views.

“I was very shocked because I haven't had that much engagement on social media before, but I really knew there was something there because of how many people do love Joanns, just like I do,” Alexander said.

Alexander said that as a precaution, she’s stocking up on fabric. She currently has piles of orders almost as tall as her ceiling space.

“I'm still very excited for the future and so focusing on growing my business despite what may happen to Joann, but we will see what happens," she said.

Alexander said she's had sales in almost all 50 states.
